Broken

In June, one of my best friends got married.

Lacey and I went to college together; because we are all artists, none of our circle of friends really knew what to get her and her husband for a gift. It’s simple to say, “You went to art school, you should give you friend a piece of your artwork.”  However, in reality, it’s actually really stressful to feel the pressure of making a really excellent piece specifically for someone that has seen almost every stumble your artwork has made over the course of the development of your portfolio.  (Not to mention that Lacey has seen more stumbles in my personal life than most people I’m close to!)  So I decided that I would embrace this fact.

Lacey once gave me a piece of her ceramic work.  What did I do?  Oh yeah, I broke it.
I loaded it up with stuff, it became heavy, and ripped the shelf it was sitting on right out of the wall.
So for her wedding present, I made this image. I think it pretty accurately describes life with Lacey—She makes it, I break it; but then I “fix” it. She is never upset about the changes that the original undergoes.

Note: This is not the actual image I presented to Lacey and Brad. They have a limited edition print of a different frame. This is the one you’ll see without going to her house.
